Abstract


Neonatal sepsis IS a maJor cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. The incidence IS 1 to 4 per 1000 live birth in developed countries (Gotoff, 1996) while it .ranges from 2.3/
1000 live birth (Daoud, 1995) to 16.8/ 1000 birth (Pawa, 1997)

in developing countries. Mortality rates ranges from 13-50% with higher rates seen in prematures and those with early fulminant disease despite advances in antibiotic therapy and life support equipment (McCrackell alld Soez Liorells, 1993).



The aun of this study was to clarify risk factors, clinical and laboratory findings of neonatal septicemia in . Port-Said general hospitals.



This study was carded out on 62 neonates proved• to have septicemia by positive blood culture, matched with 30 normal neonates as a control group.



Haematological study 111 the form of; • complete blood picture, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein was performed for both patients and controls. Bacteriological study in the form of blood culture and urine culture.
