NITROGEN USE EFFICIENCY OF POTATO CROP IN THE NEWLY RECLAIMED CALCAREOUS SOIL

AHMED MOHAMED MOHAMED HUSSEIN;

Abstract

Two successive field experiments were carried out at the west Nubaria region, El-Ashar Talaf Village, 62 km of Alexandria-Cairo desert road during both the winter (Mahayara) seasons of95/1996 and
96/1997.

The mam objectives of this study was to evaluate N-use efficiency in• such an area and to estimate the optimum N rate applied

to potato plants, for best tuber yield and quality. The soil of the experimental site was of loamy sand texture with 16.3% ; CaC03 content.

Local produced certified potato seed tubers of "Spunta". Cultivar were planted in a wet soil during the second half of October of 1995 and 1996. Potato seed tubers were planted in row 6.25 m long,
0.7 m •wide and tubers were planted in hills 0.25 in apart. Harvesting was•accomplishd 140 days after phi.nting for both seasons

Six N fertilizer rates i.e., 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg N/fed were tested. The other studied factor was the number ofN fertilizer applications, 2, 3, 4 and 5 equal doses during the growing seasons. The first dose of N fertilizer was applied in the form of ammonium sulphate (20.5%• N). The second dose was applied 30 days after planting and the following doses were applied at I 0 day intervals in the form of ammonium nitrate (33.5% N).
