CHARACTERIZATION OF COUPLING BETWEEN OPTICAL WAVEGUIDES AND ITS APPLICATIONS

Shaban Marzouk El-Adl;

Abstract

A detailed theoretical study of the coupling characteristics between optical waveguides is presented. A theoretical model based on solution of the wave equation for a multimode optical fiber for computing its propagation characteristic is analyzed. In addition, the coupling characteristics of two-core multimode optical fiber directional coupler is also investigated, the effect of all interesting parameters such as optical wavelength, core refractive index, the coupling length, two core centers separation, the angle between two cores, and the fiber offset on the coupling performance has been studied. The study shows that this types of models c'an be exploited as an optical switch, optical splitter, and optical monitors. Optical fiber wavelength division multiplexer based on two mode coupling had been analyzed, the coupling performance between the two lowest order modes in the same waveguides had been theoretically analzed, also the coupling between the two fundamental modes (each in a waveguide) had been theoretically analyzed. The obtained results show that, this type of models can be exploited as an optical fiber wavelength division multiplexer for single-mode optical fiber systems.
