DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF ROTAVIRUS INFECTION IN CHILDREN . PRESENTING WITH DIARRHEA

Marwa Mohammed Abd Al Aleem;

Abstract

Rotavirus is the most common diarrheal pathogen in children worldwide, infecting nearly every child around the globe by the age of 5 years.

It is by far the single most important cause of immense morbidity and mortality worldwide leading to about one third of all severe diarrheal cases in infants .and children requiring clinic and haspita! visits, and about
600,000 - 800,000 deaths each year, which constitutes 25% of deaths due to diarrheal disease and 6% of all deaths in children less than 5 years of age, where 80 - 90 % of children mortality occurs in under-developed countries where diarrhea and mal-nutrition have a synergistic effect. In developed countries, mortality is very rare, but the health care and societal costs of rotavirus-related morbidity are enormous. Because of this tremendous global burden of rotavirus disease, vaccines could be the plausible means to reduce rotavirus disease burden.

Obtaining accurate estimates of the rotavirus disease burden are crucial to assess the need for rotavirus vaccines. In our study; conducted on a series of one hundred infants and children suffering from diarrhea, selected randomly from the outpatient gastroenterology clinic in the Specialized Pediatric Hospital of Cairo University Hospitals, the following was revealed:

• The prevalence rate of rotaviral diarrhea was 39% as detected by
RIDASCREE .

• All the 39 rotavirus positive cases in our study were younger than or equal to 2 years of age.
