Gamma-ray Spectroscopic I measurements on powdered granite samples from Aswan area and Wadi Allaqi

Mahmoud Ali Hussein Ibrahim;

Abstract

The Present study is a conntinuation of the program of measuring natural radioactivity in different environmental media in Qena, Red sea and Aswan, Upper Egypt. Gamma ray spectrometry in radiation physics laboratory at Qena have been applied to estimate radioactivities and hence the concentrations of uranium-238, thorium-232 and potassium-40 in young and old granite samples collected from Aswan areas (Gebel Ibrahim pacha, El-shellal, El-sheikh harun and Sehyel island) and Wadi allaqi (180Km southeastren Aswan, upper Egypt).

Uranium-238 and Thorium-232 activities were determined vt•a the•tr gamma emt•ttm• g daughters (2'4Pb, 214B1• , £or uram.um and 212Pb, 228Ac and 208Tl for Thorium) under the assumption of radioactive equilibrium, while potassium-40 is a direct
gamma ray emitter.
