Abstract

This study was conducted in Haram City, Sixth of October. Data for this study were
obtained from two major sources: literature review followed by fieldwork and case
study analysis. The literature review explored the notion of social sustainability,
together with its assessment methods. The case studies included examples from San
Adrià de Besos in Spain, Santa Catarina in Brazil, and Third Calcutta Metropolitan
area in India. They were selected to provide the widest possible spatial and
institutional coverage of how social sustainability had been incorporated and
monitored in urban regeneration schemes at varying development stages, diverging
urban scales and in the context of different institutional arrangements. In order to
conduct the research work for the local case study, several methods were used, these
included: field studies, interviews with locals and residents, Social indicators
measures, and a residents’ questionnaire. For the indicators measures, the scores
obtained from the monitoring indicators were totaled and then the average was
calculated. The scores were represented in a radar diagram, which visualized the
overall position of each theme and identified areas that were underperforming and
need improvement. For the questionnaire, 68 residents were selected randomly for
this investigation. This questionnaire investigated the characteristics of living in the
city that included housing, transport, services provided and physical design and the
social capital that included trust; reciprocity and mutuality; shared norms of
behavior; shared commitment and belonging; formal and informal social networks.
It was uploaded on the official website by its developer, and interviews were
conducted by telephone with some residents. Responses of the survey were made
on a 5-point Likert scale.
The results revealed that on one hand, Haram City performs well in term of nonphysical
aspects, on the other, the physical aspects such as housing, transport;
services and physical design were mediocre. From the case studies, some guidelines
for implementing an Integrated Development Planning programme in any urban
regeneration projects to solve social sustainability problems were proposed.
