Abstract

The study was carried out at Ain Shams University Hospital and aimed to study the Visual Evoked Potential in Hyperthyroid and Hypothyroid patients.

VEPs show the integrity of the optic nerve. It g1ves measurable and objective data. It is reproducible, sensitive and non invasive technique.

The present work composed of 30 subjects. They were divided into three groups. The first group: composed of I 0 untreated hyperthyroid patients, the second group composed of I 0 untreated hypothyroid patients, the third group composed of I 0 healthy subjects with matched age and sex.

All the subjects were submitted to history taking, clinical examination, laboratory studies, fundus examination, intra-ocular pressure measurement, degree of proptosis measurement, visual field assessment, degree of visual acuity, the thyroid function tests (TSH, T3, T4) and VEPs measurement.

Latency (PIOO), was significantly higher in both thyroid groups (hyperthyroid, hypothyroid) than in control subjects.

There was significant positive correlation in the abnormal hyperthyroid patients between the increased level of T3 and T.and
