BIODEGRADATION OF OIL IN POLLUTED WATER

Nahed Mohamed Amer;

Abstract

The drastic marine pollution caused by petroleum oil on the Egyptian marine environment is drawing considerable attention by the Egyptian authorities. Therefore, the present investigation is being carried out in the biodegradation of oil in polluted water. It has been carried out in an effort to contribute in solving such problems.
The approach for such problems is based upon the fact that petroleum oil contains substances that are biodegradable by microorganisms.

The microbial degradation of the crude oil is initially characterized by rapid disappearance of n. paraffin. In general the results of the microbial activity is the formation of a residue which can be considered as a form of a stable non toxic organic matter.

In this work experimental studies included isolation of bacterial strains from tanker ballast water supplied from Ras Ghareb (Egypt). The isolated bacteria are tested for their ability to utilize and biodegrade the crude oil as well as dodecane (C 12).
The latter was taken as one representative of saturates present in
