NEUROSURGICAL ASPECT OF FAILED BACK SURGERY SYNDROME

Abstract


Failed back surgery syndrome ( F.B.S.S.) or its euphemism "failed back syndrome" is persistent or recurrent low back pain with or without sciatica, following one or more lumbar spine operations. In broader sense, it reflects the failure of lumbar spine surgery to relieve pain and incapacitation.


- This study was conducted on 30 patients, who were diagnosed to have failed back surgery syndrome (F.B.S.S.), and were treated both in Egypt Air Hospital and Heliopolis Hospital during the last 4 years.


- The age incidence ranged from 24 to 58 years with the mean age 36 years.


- The incidence of males predominance 7.86% to female
3.13%.


- The occupation incidence with strenuous work 40% , light work 3.53% and 7.6% unemployed.


- The Aetiological factors includes epidural fibrosis I 0%, recurrent disc herniation 7% , disc space infection with or without arachnoiditis 6% other factors include post operative meningiocele, lateral recess stenosis and operation at wrong level.


- M.R.I was the first tool for diagnosis offailed back surgery syndrome now a days with C.T scan, lumbar myelography and plain X-Ray lumbar spines.


- Different modalities were done for treatment 6f failed back
Surgery syndrome, surgical 7.46% and non-surgical3.53%.
