Abstract


The aim of the present work was to study cytological, biochemical, bacteriological immunological parameters in Egyptian patients with bilharzia! hepatic fibrosis and ascites.

One hundred patients with bilharzia! hepatic fibrosis having ascites admitted to Internal Medicine Department Tanta University Hospital were studied, from whom we found 30 patients with clinical manifestations suggestive of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Also I 0 normal persons are taken as a control group.

All the patients were subjected to the following:

I. Through history taking.

II. Complete clinical examination.

Ill. Laboratory investigations including: A. Urine and stool analysis.
B. Standard liver function tests.

• Serum bilirubin.

• Serum albumin.

• Serum SGPT.

• Serum SGOT.

• Total serum protein.
c. Rectal snip for schistosomiasis. D. Serum C3 and C4 •
E. Ultrasonography.

F. Abdominal paracentesis and ascitic fluid examination for: (I) Total protein content.
(2) Specific gravity.
