TALECTOMY (ASTRAGELECTOMY)
MEDHAT KH. MOHAMED MAREI;
Abstract
Talus is an important bone in the ankle joint, which plays a very important role in the ankle and subtalar joint movement.
It has neck, body and head. 3/5 of the bone is covered with
cartilage and gives no muscle or tendons attachment. Its position
•...-•.F
bet•veen the medial and lateral malleolus, calcaneum and tibia makes It a milestone in the ankle movement. Poor blood supply of the talus makes the talus at risk of avascular necrosis. The ankle and subtalar joint and their range of movement depend on and controlled by the talus shape and position.
In severe rigid deformities of the foot such as talepus equino varus, at1hrogryposis multiplex congenita and spina bifida as to correct the foot deformity talus should be removed.
Talus is a poorly blood supply bone,so, talectomy is indicated when avascular necrosis of the bone is inevitable whatever the cause, traumatic, infective or neoplastic.
