Abstract


Obesityisconsideredamajorhealthandsocioeconomicproblem.Overweight,obesityandmorbidobesityaretermsoftenusedtodescribeindividualswithandincreasedbodyfat.Themostcommondefinitionofmorbidobesityisabodymassindex(BMI)of40Kg/m2ormore.Morethan250millionindividualsareobese.Theetiologyofthisconditionismultifactorsincluding;familialandgeneticpredisposition,druginducedobesity,endocrinalcauses,childhoodovernutrition,intakeoffoodinlargequantitiesandmanytimesintheday,psychologicalfactors,environmentalfactors,specialhabitslikealcoholconsumptionandsmokingandpersonalfactorslike;age,gender,ethnicityandparity.
Clearunderstandingofthepathophysiologyofmorbidobesityisessentialformanagementandpreventionofthisdisaster.Thereareseveralfactorsconcerningtheoccurrenceofobesity,thefirstoneinthismechanismisthegeneticcontrolalsocentralnervoussystemcontrol,afferentsignals,patternoffeeding,socioeconomicfactors,exerciseandpatternofdistributionofexcessadiposetissue,leptinalso,havearoleinthemechanismofthisdisease.Leptinisthebestknownoftheafferentfatsignalsandthebestcandidateforprimarysignalcommunicationofbodyfatinformationtothecentralcontroller.
Therearemanydisastrousdiseasesassociatedwithmorbidobesityincluding;cardiovasculardiseases,diabetesmellitus,respiratoryproblems,digestivediseases,arthritis,chronicabdominalcompartmentalsyndrome,hernia,infectiousproblems,pseudotumourcerebri,endocrinalabnormalities,psychologicalproblems,complicationsassociatedwithpregnancy,cancer,neurologicalcomplica-
