STUDIES ON DOWNY MILDEW OF MAIZE IN EGYPT
MOHAMED TAHA SADOMA;
Abstract
The downy mildew of maize caused by Peronosclerospora sorghi (Weston and Uppal) Shaw, has become a serious disease in Egypt. The present investigation was mainly carried out to study the causal organism and its distribution in Egypt. and the symptoms were also described.
The effect of disease on the morphological characters of maize plants was determined.
Cross inoculation between maize and sorghum plants was done.
This work also included evaluation of local maize genotypes to
their response to the infection with downy mildew .
The effect of sowing date on the incidence of downy mildew , and also chemical control of downy was studied .
The present investigation was carried out during 1992 - 1994 growing seasons at Gemmeiza and Sakha Agricultural Research
. stations, Gharbiya and Kafr El-Sheikh Governorates, respectively.
The results obtained could be summarized'as follows:
1- Survey was carried out at 1992 in different districts of Kafr El Sheikh, Gharbiya and Demiatte Governorates and revealed that the disease infection increased on maize farms followed or near sorghum plants . whereas the disease infection decreased on maize far from sorghum farms.
. 2-Diseas symptoms on both maize and sorghum plants were studied . Infection usually produce local or systemic infection.
