Abstract

Over the past few decades, different refractive techn iques have been presented to offer the best visual outcome for ametropic pat i ents. However, of all these vari ab l e techniqu es LASIK (laser assisted in situ keratomiluesis) i s considered to be the latest and the safest.

LASIK i s a refractive lamellar surgical procedure that a lters the anterior curvature of the cornea by removing stroma from w ithin the cornea, l eavi ng Bowman's l aye r and the epithel ium virtu a lly intact. Th e technique involves creating a n a nteri or corneal flap w ith a microkeratome, ablating the underlying stroma l bed with an excimer laser, and replacing the flap.

LASIK comp lication s a re quite variable and can be classified as:

- P rco pcJ-ative co mp l i ca tio n s, which are c l assified into:

... Anesthesia complications, which may resu l t in epithelia l edema a nd sloughing from excessive application of topica l a nesthetic drops.

... Drape and speculum complications , whi ch may lead to inadequate exposure of the operative field .

... corneal marking complications, which may include epit helia l toxicity if the gentian vio let i s used, together with debri s in the interface and epithel i a l irregularities.
... complications (rom tear film and conjunctival secretions, that may lead to debris in the interface.
