Abstract

Since ECM started gaining recognition as a potential process, increasing applications are coming into use. One of these applications in which ECM has already proved success and economy is the field of
generating shapes of moderate complexity with a highly accepted

The normal expected difficulty in using ECM is the prediction of the product shape for a certain tool shape or the required tool design for a certain product.

The objective of the present work is to study the possibility of properly using the ECM process for groove shaping and mainly internal grooving, machining either axial, circumferenciill or helical grooves.

The study included experimental tests with measurements to evaluate the deviations from the expected profile through a suggested ECM mathematical model in order to assist the tooling design.

A test rig has been designed and manufactured to suit the requirements of the tests, then a preliminary study is carried out to detect the convenient working parameters for the designed test rig, taking the plain structural steel as workpiece material and using Sodium Chloride solution as an electrolyte in order to attain maximum productivity.
