The Effect of Malnutrition and Breast feeding on Cognitive Development

Abstract
T
he aim of this work was to study the effect of malnutrition and breast feeding on cognitive development of children aged 7 – 12 years.
This study was conducted on 100 children aged between 7 – 12 years who were randomly recruited from a primary school in Abbassia district of Cairo, Egypt in the period from January to June 2014. They were 69 males and 31 females and their ages ranged between 88.43 ± 136.20 months with a mean age of 103.78 ± 7.51 months. All children were subjected to a questionnaire including socio-demographic data, Complete clinical examination, Subtests of the Wechsler’s intelligence scale and anthropometric measurements including weight, height and mid upper arm circumference. Body Mass Index was calculated for each child.
All the data concerning weight, height and BMI were plotted on WHO growth curves and Z scores were calculated. According to the BMI Z score values, the included children were classified into well nourished with BMI Z score between 2 and -2 and malnourished with BMI Z score > 2 or < -2. Children with malnutrition were divided into obese (Weight > 2 Z scores), underweight (Weight < -2 Z scores), stunted (Height < -2 Z scores) and wasted (MAC < -2 Z scores).
