Mohamed Omar Mohamed;

Abstract

Typhoid fever and brucellosis are bacteraemic diseases prevalent in many areas of the world including Egypt. The defenitive test for diagnosis of both diseases is isolation of the organism from blood during the bacteraemic stage of the disease. However this technique is tedius, time consuming and expensive. The commonly used test for diagnosis is the detection of antibodies against both salmonella and brucella organisms in serum. However the results of serology should be interpretted cautiosly due to high incidence of false positive results. These false positive results may be due to past infection, immunization or cross reactivity with other antigens.
