Value of estimation of Urinary leukotrienes (LTs) in allergic rhinitis patients with and without asthma in relation to the severity of the disease

Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Alim;

Abstract

The important role of Lis as mediators of inflamation in allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma has been demonstrated by studies showing the presence of these sulphidopeptide in the nasal secretion & lavage, sputum, urine, broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF), plasma of patients.

Our present study was concerned with measurement of urinary LTE4 levels in allergic rhinitis patients with or without bronchial asthma and correlation to the clinical severity as assessed by peak expiratory flow rate. (PEFR)

The study was performed on 40 patients with allergic rhinitis (with and without bronchial asthma); 33 females (76.5%) and 7 males (23.5%).Their ages ranged from 17 to 60 years. The patients were chosen up from the allergy outpatient clinic of Ain Shams University hospitals. 20 healthy subjects were also chosen as controls, and included 13 females (65%) and 7 males (35%).Their ages ranged from 20 to 66 years.

All the patients were subjected to the following:

l.Full detailed allergic history and clinical examination.

2.Peak expiratory flow rate percentage (PEFR)
