Comparative study between CardiaMed valves (freely floating valve leaflets) vs. SJM (fixed floating valve leaflets) In Mitral valve Replacement surgery

Abstract
The search for ideal valve substitute that could mimic the characteristics of a normal native valve is ongoing process with new ideas and designs to improve the hemodynamics and characteristics of the prostheses being developed everyday by the leading companies worldwide.
While the St.Jude Medical standard bileaflet prosthetic valves crowned as the "Golden standard" worldwide. in which most of the other mechanical prosthetic valves compared to. Cardiamed bileaflet prosthetic valve with its revolutionary design and features of freely floating bileaflets clamming better thrombo- resistance and superior hemodynamic.
This study to compare the early postoperative hemodynamic and major clinical events in patients with mitral valve disease requiring MVR surgery. receiving SJM & Cardiamed valves.
Sixty patients with mitral valve disease, who were scheduled for elective MVR at Ain Shams University hospitals were chosen for our study. The 60 patients were further divided into two groups. Group I : 30 patients received the Cardiamed prosthetic valve and Group II: 30 patients received the SJM standard bileaflet prosthetic valve. There were no statistical differences between the groups regarding sex, age and other parameters in demographic data and preoperative risk factors. The mean age was (mean 42.5 + 8.3 years) for Group I and (mean 40.5 + 11.7 years) for Group II. Group I comprised 14 males (46.6%) and 16 females (53.3%) while Group II comprised 13 males (43.3%) and 17 females (56.7%). Preoperative Echo assessment showed no statistical differences (P>0.05) between the two groups.
As for the intraoperative data assessment, there was no statistical differences regarding the total Aortic cross clamp time, total bypass time and the need for the intropic support in both groups.
