INTERLEUKIN-6 AS A NON-INVASIVE MARKER FOR THE SEVERITY OF NON-ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE

Neveen Saber Shenouda;

Abstract

Interleukin 6 could be used as sensitive marker for cases of Non alcoholic fatty liver disease.
The aim of the study: is to assess the correlation between serum levels of the Interleukin-6 and the severity of liver affection in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Subjects & Methods: This study was performed on 60 subjects, 50 cases were selected as they showed a picture of fatty liver (proved by abdominal ultrasound), 10 healthy age matched subjects (BMI >25kg/m²) with no manifestations of fatty liver by ultrasound were chosen as a control for serum level of interleukin 6. All cases were subjected to the following: Full history taking and physical examination, full anthropometric measurements, laboratory studies including serum interleukin 6, abdominal US.
Results: Showed significantly higher levels of serum interleukin 6 in NAFLD patients compared to control subjects. Serum AST, ALT, cholesterol, LDL and Triglycerides were elevated in NAFLD patients than control group. There was a positive correlation between NAFLD and NAFLD fibrosis score was detected. The best cut off value of interleukin 6 to predict patients of NAFLD with diabetes from healthy control is ≥0.1 (pg/mL) and The best cut off value of interleukin 6 to predict patients of NAFLD only from healthy controls is ≥0.15 (pg/mL).
Conclusion: interleukin 6 could be used as sensitive noninvasive marker to predict the presence of NAFLD.
Keywords: NAFLD, interleukin 6
