STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF PRAZIQUANTEL ON INTRACTABLE SCHISTOSOMA MANSON/ INFECTION IN CHILDREN AND IN EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS
Sahar Mahmoud Selim;
Abstract
Schistosomiasis is one of the major debilitating parasitic infections, affecting about 200 million people throughout the world and responsible for 800,000 deaths per year (WHO, 1993). It is considered the most dangerous endemic parasitic infection in Egypt in view of its prevalence, morbidity and effect on national economy. The present study was performed in order to study the effect of praziquantel on intractable Schistosoma mansoni infection in both children and experimental animals.
Study on Human Cases:
The study was carried out in Shober Village, Gharbia Governorate on one hundred and seventy five male children aged l0-15 years. Those children had shown resistance to a single dose of praziquantel (40 mg/kg) given previously by the Schistosomiasis Research Project (SRP). Stool specimens were examined for S. mansoni eggs using the Kato Katz technique.
