Simulated quadrantectomy after mastectomy: A clinico-patho-cytogenetic study of breast cancer in Egyptian women

Alaa Mohamed El-Erian;

Abstract

Treatment of early breast cancer (stage I and II) by breast conserving surgery rather than total mastectomy and axillary dissection may dimminish the chances of long term cure by risking incomplete removal of all local carcinoma at the initial operation. Multifocality and multicentricity of breast cancer are considered as major deterrents to breast conserving surgical therapy. This study was undertaken in Ain Shams University hospitals from March 1995 to March 1998. To determine by histopathological examination how often carcinoma might remain in the breast after partial mastectomy (Quadrantectomy), and to identify factors that are significantly associated with both multifocality and multicentricity, thus constituting the high risk factors for local recurrence in the breast.
