Abstract

ThemostimportantbenefitsofvitaminsCandEare their role as antioxidants and scavengers of particles as reactive oxygenspecies(ROS) thatalso sometimescalled oxidants. The objectives of the studyare toevaluate the antioxidant effect of vitamin C or/and vitamin E as supplements in glycemic control and controlling the lipid profileamongtype2diabeticpatientstreatedwithmetformin inGazastrip.Thestudywas carriedusing40mentype2 diabetesmellitus patientsfrom theUNRWAhealthcentersin GazaStrip,Palestineand10controlshealthy non-diabetic individuals.Type2diabetic patientsweretreatedwith metforminanddividedintofour groups; eachgroup(n=10) receivingone of thefollowingsorally placebo; vitaminC; vitaminE;vitaminC plusvitaminEfor90days.Beforeand after treatment, bloodsampleswerecollectedandtheresults wereanalyzedAsignificantdecrease inFBG,HbA1c,serum insulin, HOMA-IR, ASAT,TC, TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-Cand GR, incontrast,a significantincrease in QISCI,GSH-Pxand GSH wereseeninthe groupsupplementedwithvitaminC or/andvitaminEcomparedwithdiabetic patientsgroupthat received placebo.Whereas asignificantdecreasein ALAT wasseeninthegroupsupplementedwith vitaminC only, as wellasasignificantdecreaseinuricacid,TGandVLDL-C was seen in the group supplemented with vitamin C and vitaminCplusvitaminE.However, thegroupsupplemented

withvitaminEdidnotproduceany significantchangeinuric acid,TG,andVLDL-C.Ontheother hand,a significant increase inHDL-Cwas seen inthe group supplementedwith vitamin C and vitamin E. While, a significant decrease in RBC,Hb,andHCT wasseenintheplacebogroupwhenthe valuesbeforeandafterwerecompared. Moreover,type2 diabeticpatientsdid show significantpositiveand negative correlations betweenFBG versussomeglycemicvalues;and HbA1c versussomeantioxidantenzymes, respectivelyforzero day treatment.Whereas, thereweresignificantpositive correlations between FBGversus someglycemic values in diabeticpatients groupthatreceived placebofor90days. Also, type2diabeticpatientsdidshow significant positive correlations betweenGSTandMDAforzero-day treatment. Moreover, therewassignificantly negativeandpositive correlations betweenGST versusMDAandbetweenRBCs versusG6PD,aswellasHCTversusGR,respectively in diabeticpatientsgroupreceivedvitaminCplusvitaminEfor
90 days.On theotherhand,therewasa significantnegative correlationbetweenHCTversusMDA indiabeticpatients groupthatreceivedplacebofor 90days.
