Recent advances in sepsis-induced Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation
Mohammed Mahmoud Elsayed Abd-Elhadi;
Abstract
Blood coagulation is essential to our health; however, when it proceeds abnormally, myocardial infarction, stroke, or pulmonary embolism can result. Maintaining blood in a fluid state is vital in order to deliver oxygen, nutrients, and physiological messengers throughout the body. The hemostatic system achieves this balance between the fluid and solid states of blood.
Appropriate understanding of the hemostatic systems and it`s phases and components helps in proper diagnosis and treatment of any abnormalities that may happen.
Sepsis is defined now as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Organ dysfunction can be identified as an acute change in total SOFA score ≥2 points consequent to the infection.
During sepsis, the infectious agent triggers a series of proinflammatory reactions that manifest as hemodynamic imbalance, organ dysfunction and almost universal signs of coagulation abnormalities. The most severe form of coagulation disturbance is disseminated intravascular
