EFFECTS OF AERODYNAMICS ON THE COOLING EFFICIENCY OF A BUS REAR ENGINEAkram Osama Abd-Elkhalek Abo-Bakre
AbstractThe thesis is concerned with the effect of opening the engine door of a rear engine intercity bus on the efficiency of the engine cooling. The study covered five different opening positions for the engine door during the typical public intercity transportation service offered by a company owned by the holding company for Mari-time and land transportation. The service route was chosen between Cairo and Ismailia. Five different engine door positions were chosen (completely closed, ¼ opening, ½ opening, ¾ opening and full opening) and the temperatures for the radiator coolant inlet and outlet as well as the temperatures of the cooling air across the radiator were measured. The thesis contains a comprehensive summary of studies and published research works relevant to the subject of the study including the dependency of engine cooling heat load on the vehicle operating conditions, besides some researches related to the air pressure, velocity and direction around the bus body and hence stating the objective of the present study. The thesis included a detailed description a specially made provision to fix the door opening at the required five positions and in addition, all components of the measuring sensors and equipment utilized to obtain and store the experimental results during the test periods in form of digital files to be used to plot, visualize, analyze and discuss the results. The thesis presented the measured and recorded data in the form of temperature curves which included four trips between Cairo and Ismailia cities; where in the first and second trips the engine door opening was changed during each trip, while the engine door was completely closed during the third trip and the door was completely opened during the fourth trip. The variations in the maximum and minimum temperatures of the coolant fluid and cooling air together with the average values and standard deviation have been shown at the inlet and outlet positions. A general comparison, in the form of bar diagrams has been carried out for the four trips in order to show the effect range of opening the engine door on the temperature. The main conclusions reached in this study is that the effects of opening the engine door do not exceed 8.9, 8.2 [oC] at the inlet and outlet positions of the radiator coolant, respectively while the corresponding values for the cooling air were 6.9 and 13.5 [oC]. The experiments and measurement showed that the temperature of the coolant medium did not exceed the typical values of the diesel engines, in general and for the engine fitted on the tested bus, in particular. The study concluded that no practical or scientific reasons which justify or support the action of opening the engine door during the typical service offered by this type of buses utilized in the inter-city public transportation. In addition, recommendations for future study in the field are included. Key words Bus – rear engine – engine cooling efficiency – engine door opening positions.
