Correlation occult hepatitis B virus infection and transfusion transmitted virus (TTV) in renal Egyptian patients undergoing hemodialysis

Nahla Atef Ali El –Zohairy;

Abstract

Torque teno virus (TTV) and Occult hepatitis B infection (OBI) are considered to be the major risks for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on regular hemodialysis (HD). The aim of this work to study the prevalence of TTV infection among HD patients, to screen these patients for occult hepatitis B infection which might be an important source of the continuous HBV infection in HD units and to study the prevalence of OBI among these patients as a source of HBV infection in HD units. Methods: Serum samples were collected from 61 HD patients and 16 healthy individual as control group. Anti-HCV antibody, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). TTV DNA was detected by semi-nested-PCR and HBV was detecting using nested PCR. HCV RNA was detected using real time (qRT-PCR). The prevelance of TTV was 24/61(39.34%) and with HCV was 9/61(14.8%) among HD patients. Prevalence of OBI was 20/61(32.79%) and 0/61(0%) with HCV among HD patients.
