Effects of Ivermectin and Doramectin Drugs in Concurrent with Vitamin E on the Fertility in Male Rats

Shimaa Ramadan Emam Mohamed;

Abstract

The present study was designed to assess the protective and
antioxidant effects of ivermectin (IVM) and doramectin (DOM), at
therapeutic and double therapeutic dose, when orally given alone and in
combination with vitamin E against sodium valproate (SVP)-induced
testicular toxicity and oxidative stress in male rats. In addition, effects
of both drugs alone and in combination with vitamin E on liver and
kidney functions, lipid peroxidation, blood picture and histopathology
of testis, liver and kidneys were also studied.
A total of 70 Sprague-Dawley sexually mature male rats were
randomized into 2 main groups, of 35 rats each. Each main group was
subdivided into equal 7 subgroups. For studying effects of ivermectin
(IVM) and vitamin E (Vit. E.), subgroup (1) was used as a negative
control. The remaining 6 subgroups were intoxicated by oral single
dose of sodium valproate (SVP) during the last week of experiment (65
days) to induce testicular damage. Subgroup (2) was kept as a positive
control (intoxicated rats), while subgroups (3), (4), (5), (6) and (7) were
respectively pretreated with therapeutic dose (0.2 mg/kg) of IVM
alone, double therapeutic dose (0.4 mg/kg b.wt.) of IVM alone, vitamin
E (40 mg/kg b.wt.) alone, therapeutic dose of IVM concomitantly with
Vit. E and double therapeutic dose of IVM concomitantly with Vit. E.
