Abstract

The vertebral artery is of clinical importance as it is vulnerable to mechanical injury during cervical spine manipulations. The course of the vertebral artery is peculiar as it passes in part of its course in a bony canal and also as it passes partly extracranial and partly intracranial, therefore the aim of the present work was to study the anatomy and histology of its different parts in
30 human cadavers. To enhance the histological picture fresh specimens from five donkeys (Equus asinus) were used.

The vertebral artery in human arose from the first part of subclavian artery on the right and left sides, while in Equus asinus it arose from subclavian on left side and from brachiocephalic trunk on the right side. The first part of vertebral artery in human had a tortuous course in
60°/o of cases while in Equus asinus it was always
straight.
The right vertebral artery in human had a larger internal diameter than that of the left side. On the other
