?•••VISCERAL ADIPOSE TISSUE ACCUMULATION COULD IT BE A RISK FACTOR IN NON-OBESE INDIVIDUALS

Abstract

Our research aims to study the relationship between insulin resistance expressed by HOMA and visceral fat accumulation in non obese individuals using the peri-renal fat as an indicator of intra abdominal adipose tissue. For this study we have chosen sixty non-obese individuals with normal BMI. They included 20 healthy individuals with normal glucose tolerance; 20 impaired glucose tolerance patients and 20 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

For each individual through clinical examination; BMI; WHR; oral glucose tolerance test; lipogram; fasting insulin level and computed tomography to measure the peri-renal fat and subcutaneous fat were done.

In our study, there was no significant correlation found between HOMA and right, left or mean peri renal fat, also I}.O significant correlation was found between HOMA and abdominal subcutaneous fat in any of the studied group inspite of their increase in type 2 diabetes. This indicate that the peri-renal fat is not a good indicator of insulin resistance as the total visceral fat. More interestingly we have found positive significant correlation between WHR, HOMA in the group of type 2 diabetes, IGT.
