Abstract

The

dimethyl

formamide was

used

as

an

inhibitor

for

polymerization of acrylic acid during esterification reaction with

different alcohol such as butyl, hexyl, Octyl, decyl and dodecyl

alcohol in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as an initiator and ρ-

Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate as catalyst. The effect of

different molar ratio of DMF in the presence of p-TSA, the effect

of different molar ratio of DMF in the presence of benzoyl

peroxide, the effect of different concentration of p-TSA and

finally the effect of different concentration of benzoyl peroxide

were studied. The prepared esters are characterized by FTIR to

detect the ester group and vinyl group, also mass spectroscopy to

measure the molecular weight of the prepared esters.

Esterification of acrylic acid with different alcohol was carried

out without inhibitor in the presence of (p-TSA) monohydrate as a

catalyst. The molecular weight of the product was very high

127000 g/mol, FTIR show that, the peak of C=C which relates to

vinyl group of acrylic acid at 1600-1680 cm

was disappeared,

that mean the vinyl group of the acrylic acid monomer was
