Hatem Mosad Mosad Hassan;

Abstract

The present study includes 30 patients suffering from cancer larynx attending the otolaryngology department of Ain Shams University Hospital. Patients of this study were all males with the age ranging from 45 to 71 years (with the mean of 52.4 years).

Patients were subjected to the following diagnostic work up: history taking, general examination, local examination, direct laryngoscopy and biopsy, radiological examination, postoperative examination and laboratory investigations.

In this study, 70% of tumours were T3 and 30% were T4 transglottic laryngeal tumours.

Our study involved 2 pathways of investigations, a pathological component detecting thyroid tissue invaded by laryngeal malignancy and hormone one demonstrating the effect of surgery, radiotherapy or both on the ftmction of the left lobe of thyroid and parathyroid glands.

In our series, thyroid gland invasion was noted in 4 cases (13.3%), all were T4 transglottic carcinoma. The second point of the study aimed to the detection of hypothyroidism whether evident or subclinical as well as hypoparathyroidism following surgery, radiother py or combined treatment of the transglottic
laryngeal carcinoma.

Post-treatment sequential hormonal assay detected a maximum decrease of T3 hormone of combined modality
