Effect of Nursing Intervention on Child Safety at Pediatric Health Care Settings

Abstract


Many adverse events injuries that result from medical and
nursing errors can be reduced, when considering patient safety as a basic
principle in improving the quality of clinical services and patient
satisfaction. Aim: The study aimed to determine effect of nursing
intervention on child safety at pediatric health care settings Subject and
Methods: Design: This study was a quasi experimental study. Setting:
The study conducted at pediatric health care settings, general medical and
surgical wards and its specialties, affiliated to Tanta University Hospital.
Subjects: Involved all available nurses (200) who are working in the
previously mentioned settings regardless their characteristics. Tools: 1)
Pre-designed questionnaire sheet to assess nurses' knowledge towards
child's safety at pediatric health care settings, 2) Likert type rating scale to
assess nurses' attitude and beliefs towards child safety at pediatric health
care settings and 3) observation check lists to assess the actual practice of
nurses towards child's safety. These tools were used twice pre and post the
nursing intervention program. Materials: Guiding handout was prepared
by the researcher in an Arabic language according to actual educational
nurses’ needs. Result: A statically significantly difference was observed in
relation to nurses' knowledge, attitude and practice towards child’s safety
from specific hospital safety hazards pre and post nursing intervention.
Conclusion and recommendation: The study concluded that nursing
intervention program had a positive impact on knowledge, practice and
attitude of the study group towards child's safety at pediatric health care
settings. The study recommended that, emphasizing the importance of
continuous training programs for nurses working in pediatric health care
settings to prevent and control of injuries and maintain of safety.
Subjugation of the obstacles that hinder nurses' compliance with the safety
measures.
