Abstract

Type I diabetes IS a chronic autoimmune process, which characterized by the appearance of several islet cell specific antibodies that preceded the clinical onset of the disease, serum samples f •om 72 (41 families) siblings of patients with type I diabetes with mean age was 8.95 (ly- 19.67ys), and 36 age and sex matched control subject with a negative family history of type I or type 2 diabetes or autoimmune disease in first degree relatives, t9 asses the prevalence pf antibodies to IA2 , GAD and IC, only I 0 sibs of the 72 showed positive IA 2 Ab, 36 sibs of the 72 showed positive GADAb and 14 sibs of the
72 showed positive ICA, only I sib has 3 +tve Ab, 5 sibs have +tve

ICA and GADAb, 2 sibs have +tve ICA and IA 2 Ab and 4 sibs have

+tve IA 2 and GADAb, it is recommended that siblings with -two Ab positivity especially those who have two Ab positive to be followed up for development of diabetes and to undergo IVGTT to determine FPIR and to determine HLA genetic markers of type I diabetes to be able to predict subjects at high risk for type I diabetes aiming at prevention of this disease.
