OXYGEN FREE RADICALS AND PRONCHIAL 'HYPERREACTIVITY IN BRONCHIAL ASTHMA: STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF ANTIOXIDANTS
MAHMOUD M. EL-SALAHY;
Abstract
Bronchial asthma is an important epidemiological disease with a world wide distribution and affecting all age groups. Bronchial asthma has a strong genetic predisposition, with a large number of enviromnental sensitizers and a large number ofprovocating factors. All these causative factors culminate in a single firing process in the airways of asthmatics, that is airways inflammation. This inflammation is mediated by a large number of ce.llular and non cellular humoral mediators. Airways inflammation in asthma is responsible for the twichy state of asthmatic airways that become easily constricted when stimulated by trivial stimuli; a condition known as "airways hyperreactivity".
