EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON EGYPTIAN COTTON CHARACTERISTICS

EMAN MOHAMED RABIE MOHAMED SALIH;

Abstract

The present investigation was carried out to study the effect of cottonseed irradiation with various gamma-ray doses (1,
3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 kr ) emitted from Co60 source

on cotton characteristics of the two long-staple Egyptian cotton cultivars, namely; Giza 75 and Giza 85 in the M 1 , M2 and M3 generations during the three successive seasons; 1997, 1998 and 1999 at the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University at Shalakan, Kalubia Governorate. Characters studied were, germination percentage, seedling growth characters (length, fresh and dry weights), earliness (days to first flower appearance and position of first sympodium node), plant height, boll number per plant, boll weight, seed cotton yield I plant, lint % and seed index.
The obtained results can be summarized as follows :

A. The M1 generation

1-High y-doses from 5 up to 60 kr progressively inhibited seed germination whereas the lower doses did not differ significantly from the unirradiated control. Giza 75 was more . sensitive to y-rays than Giza 85 cv. The cultivar (C) x doses (D) interaction showed that highest germination was found at
1 kr in Giza 85 (93%) while the lowest was at 60 kr Giza 75 (32%).
2-Seedling length decreased by increasing the gamma dose.

3-The 1 kr dose caused stimulation effect on seedling fresh weight, while higher doses caused stunting effect on this trait.
