EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL MODELING OF FLUORESCENT LAMP CIRCUITS

Ahmed Faheem Mohamed;

Abstract

In contrast to the usual approach, fluores•cent lamp circuits are anlaysed her. e not with the help of a linear modebut as non-linear systems. With the help of an
idealization of the strongly non-linear voltage-current characteristic of the lamp, some new fonnulae are obtained. The fonnulae pennit a general analysis of some important network properties, e.g. the sensitivity of power consumption to changes in the amplitude of the voltage source, and also may facilitate the synthesis of ballasts for different possible requirements. The text should be useful for practical engineers. It also gives an analytical introduction into the fields of the circuits, omitting consideratiOJ,IS ofteclmological details, however permitting the estimation of different circuit parameters and understanding their roles. Theoretically obtained results are compared with experimental and engineering data and, in generathe agreement seems to be satisfactory. A developed theory of fluorescent lamp circuits is used for the calculation of the high (especially third) harmonic currents in the circuits. Some experimental results are presented and are in agreement with the theory.
