The Effect of Emotional Intelligence on Job Involvement among Nurses in Clinical Practice

Abstract
motional intelligence is an important factor in nursing as studies have shown that an emotional intelligent nurse is an individual who can work in harmony with his/her thoughts and feelings, also allows nurses to develop therapeutically relationships to meet patients and their families and to better manage stress. In the nursing profession, EI has linked to improved patient outcomes, positive productive workplace relationships, workplace leadership, and decreased job turnover. Job involvement can enhance work engagement, and perceptions of meaningfulness of the work. In addition, job involvement involves the manner of employees' perceptions from their work environment and job and immixing work and personal life. Low job involvement results in alienation with job and organization, having no goal, separation between job and life of employees.
Aim of the Work:
This study aimed to assess the effect of emotional intelligence on job involvement among nurses in clinical practice through:
1. Identifying the level of nurses involvement in their job
2. Identify emotional intelligence among nurses in clinical practice.
3. Identify the effect of emotional intelligence on their job involvement.
Subjects and methods:
Research design:
Descriptive correlation design conducted for this study.
Setting:
The present study conducted at Benha Fever Hospital.
Size:
The sample composed of 150 nursing staff.
The actual fieldwork was carried out from July (2015) to August (2015). The researcher was available in the study setting all the time. The interviewing took 15-20 minutes for each nurse.
Tool of data collection:
Data collected using the following tool:
Interview questionnaire sheet, it was written in simple Arabic language and it consisted of three parts:
o Part I: Nursing staff socio-demographic data including age, years of experience, marital status and educational level.
o Part II: emotional intelligence questionnaireto identify the level of emotional intelligence. The researcher adapted it.
o Part III: job involvement questionnaire.
The findings of the present study summarized as follows:
• More than four fifth of the studied nurses were female and the majority of them were married and their ages between 25-35 years also more than half of them had 5-15 years of experience.
• Thestudied nurses have moderate to high emotional intelligence level.
• The total score of job involvement of the studied nurses were moderate level.
• There was significant relationship between emotional intelligence and job involvement.
• There was no significant relationship between emotional intelligence and the socio-demographic data of studied nurses.
In the light of the study findings, it has concluded that there is significant relationship between emotional intelligence and job involvement and this relationship found to be positive, also there is significant correlation between component of emotional intelligence and job involvement.
• There is statistical significant relationship between job involvement of the study sample and the mean score of their socio-demographic data that represented in personal data and job characteristics data.
• There is positive correlation between emotional intelligence and job involvement that mean, by increasing the emotional intelligence of the nurses their job involvement will increase.
• The nurses' age above 45 years had higher level of emotional intelligence, while the nurses' age between 25-35 years had higher level of job involvement.
• The nurses with diploma nursing were had high level of emotional intelligence and more job involved than nurses with institute and bachelor nursing.
