MERVAT ABD EL-WAHAB EL-ADL;
Abstract
The aim of this work is to evaluate the efficacy of Praziquantel in treating Schistosoma mansoni infection and the role of Colchicine and Vitamin E as anti-fibrotic and anti-oxidant in combination with Praziquantel in the treatment and control of S. mansoni infection and
improvement of Schistosoma!intestinal and hepatic fibrosis.
This study included seventy-two Schistosoma mansoni infected patients classified into three groups I, II and III each of 24 patients.
Group 1: All patients treated with Praziquantel (60 mg/kg body weight) in two divided doses at 6 hours interval.
Group II: All patients treated with Praziquantel (in the same dose)
and Colchicine (500 Jig twice daily for two months).
Group III: All patients treated with Praziquantel (in the same dose)
and Vitamin-E (400 mg twice daily for two months).
In addition to 24 healthy voluntee:rs (control group) who received no treatment. Their mean serum Procollagen III amino terminal propeptide concentration was 1.74 J.tg/L.
Blood samples were taken from all individuals before the start of treatment, two hours after Praziquantel administration and after two months of the assigned treatment for each group, for measuring serum
Praziquantel (HPLC), serum circulating Schistosoma mansoni antigen
