Abstract


H. pylori inhabits the mucus layer which overlies the gastric epithelial cells. It occurs naturally in man and other primates and is responsible for the common fonn of chronic atrophic gastritis. The organism is infective and causes an initial acute hypochlorhydric type B atrophic gastritis, which in most individuals prot,rresses to cancer stomach. The organism is considered to be the maJor I;H;tor in atr(lphic gastritis and duodenal ulcer. It may also be responsible for many gastric ulcers and it could be iinplicated in the pathogenesis of gastric cancer.
