Role of MRI In Assessment of The Patellar Instability

Abstract
The aetiology of patellar instability is multi-factorial and often a result of abnormal patella-femoral biomechan¬ics and anatomy, as well as traumatic in origin.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), providing thin and high-resolution scans, allows an accurate study of the patello-femoral joint cartilage surface. Also, it does not involve the use of ionizing radiation, and also allows measurements to be taken at the level of the cartilage rather than only at that of the subchondral bone.
Radiological parameters are critical in the assessment of patellar instability spectrum of conditions ranging from subluxation, acute dislocation to chronic recurrent instability and help to guide treatment options. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with its excellent soft tissue contrast, is often used as a non-invasive method for evaluating the extent of soft tissue and cartilage injuries in patients with patellar instability.
