Study of The Physical Properties of Different Wedge Modalities

Abdelatif Awad Abdelatif;

Abstract

In this study a comprehensive and direct comparison of dosimetric characteristics ofthree different wedge modalities implemented into 30 Eclipse (TPS) were investigated. From the obtained results in presented study, it was concluded the following:

1- Unlike physical wedges (PW and MW), EDW factor decreased as field size increased. EDW factors were nearer to unity than PW values.

2- The monitor units (MUs) calculation could be performed accurately within

±2.5% for different plans generated by 3D Eclipse (version 6.5.0) planning system with (PBC) algorithm using different wedge modalities.

3- The obtained results for the three wedge modalities had met the clinical accuracy requirements and the 30 Eclipse TPS with (PBC) algorithm were satisfactory for planning.

4- The profiler was an adequate tool for evaluation of dosimetric properties of the three wedge modalities and verification of dose calculations obtained by Eclipse 30 (TPS).

5- Open and wedged PODs presented the same beam quality within ± 2% for PW, ± 3% for EDW and MWs. Therefore open beam POD may be used for wedged fields of same dimensions and energy at all depths.

6- The two clinical cases presented showed that. for brain case the DVH of PTV calculated using EDW was better than that calculated using PW or MWs with less scattered radiation to the optic chiasma (72°/o). For breast cast! the DVH was nearly same for PTV .:alculated by (PBC) algorithm using the three wedge modalities. The EDW achieved better dose distribution ''ith less scattered radiation to Iung (10%) than that calculated using P\V or MWs.
