Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the manganese ores
(pyrolusite ores) present in Sinai Peninsula and Elba south East of Aswan as well as their separation and recovery of manganese. Reduction leaching process is applied to the reduction of Mn02 in pyrolusite ore into MnO which is soluble in sulphuric acid. The reductants used are semi coke, metall urgical coke, charcoal, sugars (pure and raw), starch, molasses, Scums of cane sugar, electrode paste and graphite electrode. Pyrolusite ore collected from Elba and Sinai districts and FeMn slag were utilized in the present investigation. The present thesis, in general is constructed of three main chapters. In the first chapter, aim of study, orientation, introduction and literat ure survey are given. Introduction includes a short summary for classification of reductive leaching process and equipments utilized, about classifications of manganese minerals, geology of Egyptian manganese ore and origin of coal. The second chapter includes the preparation of standard solutions, reagents, solvents and methods of ore analysis and, working procedure (factors effecting the extraction efficiency of manganese in absence and in presence of reducing agents using sulphuric and hydrochloric acid, effect of ore particle size, acid concentration, reductant particle size, effect of leaching time, effect of leaching tempera ture, effect of roasting time and roasting temperature , effect of precipitation of manganese using KOH and Na2C03, drying the washing solutions as sodium or potassium sulphate). Chapter three shows the results, discussion, conclusions and recommen dation
