Effect of Domestic Violence on Women’s Health in Sohage City
Domestic violence is a social problem ,hidden but prevalent in almost every society irrespective of race, region, religion ,caste and language .It includes acts of physical ,emotional ,controlling behavior and sexual abuse by some one who is involved in intimate partner relationship with the aim of controlling or punishing the victim .Most of the time husbands are abuser ,but any member of the house hold can be involved(Bibi et al.,2014).
The present study aimed to assess the effects of domestic violence on women health through physical, emotional ,controlling behaviour and sexual abuse and assess risk factors that are expected to occur domestic violence against women in Sohage City.
Subject and methods
A descriptive , analytic study was used to assess the effects of domestic violence on women health in Sohag city . The study conducted in two MCH center namely(Dar Salama Abdulla and Akhmim Center) which introduces many services for large sector of population . A purposive sample equal 480 women.
Data was collected using two tools designed by the investigator & tested for validity: the first tool was interviews questionnaire sheet consists of eighth parts: First part: Demographic data for both husband and wife , Second part : to assess medical history of women , Third part: to assess family history of domestic violence for women , Fourth part: to assess the level of knowledge among women about domestic violence , Fifth part : to assess women reaction for violence situation . Sixth part: to assess attitude of women toward of domestic violence Seventh part: to assess risk factors related to domestic violence against women, Eighth parts: to assess effecting of domestic violence on general health status of women.
The second tool was violence Scale uses to identify domestic violence against women ,this scale was modified by investigator and constructed by WHO (2005).This scale contains four parts ; part1 : common forms of physical violence . Part 2: common forms of emotional violence. Part3: common forms of controlling behaviour. Part4 : common forms of sexual violence.
Data was collected & analyzed by computer programmed SPSS(Ver.20). using necessary statistical manipulation as ; number , percentage & standard deviation to determine significant for variables-value was considered to be significant if less than 0.05, high significant if less than 0.01,or insignificant if more than 0.05.
The main results obtained from the present study were as follows:
Regarding demographic data of domestic violence women, 46.3% of them had age ranged from (20-30), 53.1% of them were lived in a rural area and 52.7% were extended family , 23.8% of them can't read and write and 31.9% were secondary education while 82.3% of them were house wife and 50.2% weren't enough family income .As regards of husbands demographic data , showed 39.4% of them had age above 40 years old, 38.8 % of them were secondary education while41.5% of them were employee.
Regarding to the medical and family history for domestic violence women, more than two fifth of them were receiving stimulants and more than two third of them exposed to violence during childhood , 69.2% of them were exposed to psychological violence and 68.3% physical violence due to 30.2% financial problems of family . Regarding knowledge level about domestic violence, the majority of them were unsatisfactory knowledge about domestic violence.
Accordingly risk factors ,The study revealed some factors which are significantly associated with occurrence of domestic violence against women such as women characteristics like low education ,living in rural area and extended family , house wife and low family income, increase duration of marriage , increase family members, women exposed to violence during childhood and medical history as kidney infection , receiving sedative and stimulants . According to types of violence , the most common domestic violence women were emotional violence79.20% , controlling behavior71%followed by sexual violence58.3% and physical
