FUNCTIONAL PROBLEMS-IN ADULT RECTAL PROLAPSE AND CONTROVERSIES IN SURGICAL TREATMENT

Mo h a m ed Nasser Fa thi Sal eh;

Abstract

Rectal prolapse ts a condition that has been fascinated surgeons for a long time. To date, no single ideal surgical treatment has been identified.

The aetiology of rectal prolapse remams highly controversial but it is recognized that associated functional problems, such as incontinence and constipation, are common. The pathophysiology, and controversies surrounding continence and constipation remain topics of debate.

This thesis was carried on thirty patients with complete rectal prolapse (18 had constipation and 12 had incontinence).

All the patients were submitted to full clinical examination, proctosigmoidoscopy, colonic transit time, electromyography and defaecography.

As regard to the 18 patients who had associated constipation, 4 out of them had left sided slow transi t constipation and underwent resection rectopexy, the remainder (14 patients) had normal colonic transit time and underwent suture rectopexy.

As regard to the 12 patients who had associated incontinence, all underwent suture rectopexy.
