IN VITRO STUDY OF THE. EFFECT OF ANDROGENS ON CIRCULATING ERYTHROID PROGENITORS
Nahla Mohamed AbdEl-Aziz;
Abstract
Anemia is common among elderly males. Because
'
anemia is a symptom not a diagnosis, an evaluation should be
performed to identify the underlying cause. The investigations in cases of anemia are numerous and multidirectional. Recently, clonal culture techniques were developed by many workers in this field. The in-vitro studies of erythropoietic stem cells proved highly valuable concept in this respect, particularly in case of anemia developing in advanced age.
An association of testosterone with erythropoietin in the regulation of erythropoiesis have been claimed by many invest- igators. Some studies demonstrated the synergistic effect of combination of testosterone and erythropoietin on erythropo- iesis. On the other hand, other studies suggested that andro- gens not only stimulate erythropoietin but also act directly on erythroid progenitors.
