Abstract

Laboratory experiments were carried out during the period from 2012 to 2014 at the National Irrigation Laboratory of Agricultural Engineering Research Institute (AENRI), Dokki, Giza. The aim of this research was to find the proper method of application of both drip irrigation system and air injectionthrough it, so the following procedures were followed to reach and evaluate the efficient goal:

1- Emittercharacteristics (Eu, CV, Us, qvar, and (q-h) relationship).
2- Comparison of different devices for injected air with irrigation systems.
3-Comparison of the impact of air injection through subsurface drip irrigation system (single and double inlet) on the following:
a-The hydraulic performance and system distribution uniformity.
b-Dissolved oxygen (%) along laterals.
c-Moisture distribution in heavy clay soil.
4- Field application to study the effect of air injection on the water use efficiency (WUE)andplant performance in a heavy clay soil.

Two types of irrigation systems were used (porous pipe and built-in emitters), but through the experimental steps, porous pipe was ignored because it was unacceptable in all test procedures. In the second step of the experiment, compressor was used to injected air through the irrigation system.Air compressor was efficient in air velocity (m/s), air volume flow rate (m3/h) and air mass flow rate (kg/h) compared with the other devices (venturi and fluid pump). From step1 and step2, the selected emitters (built-in) and slecteded injector (compressor) were used to study the effect of injecting air through irrigation system. Data indicated that injected air through built-in emitters by compressor in the last third of irrigation time, withdouble water inlet, lead to keep acceptable performance through the measuring of (CV, qvar, and Eu) %, to indicate system performance.Italso gavethe highestpercentage ofdissolved oxygen. From the previous part, the applicationon fieldacropof Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo)gave an efficient and sufficient crop yield, water saving,WUE and less clogging ratio for system with increasing percentage in application 28.5 %, 20.0 %, 42.4 % and 3.3 % respectivelyto reach a highest system efficiency and management.

Key words: Subsurface drip irrigation - Air injection - Water use efficiency - Heavy clay soil.
