DOCUMENTARYSTUDYOFTHEFLORA OF THE NILE REGION IN ASSIUT AND SOHAG GOVERNORATES
ABD EL-HALIM ABD EL-MOGALI MOHAMED;
Abstract
1- This work aims to be a documentary study for the wild plants in Sohag Governorate as a whole, and some neighboring districts of Assiut Governorate (140 km length and 20 30 km •width) where this area characterized by its special elements including wild plants and ancient agricultural patterns which depends on the continuous irrigation from a net of river Nile canals. Also there are reclaimed lands in some neighboring places to the Eastern and Western deserts that irrigated by well water, but it is limited and usually not cultivated in summer because of water stress.
2- There are two agricultural seasons in the area of study:
a. Winter season: Usually starts in November and the crops stay in the soil till May; the important crops in this period are wheat, broad bean and clover.
b- Summer season: This period starts by cultivating cotton
crop in March which are usually tound after clover or some vegetables. But after yielding wheat or broad bean, the soil planted by maize in May and June and yielding in October.
3- The area of study was divided into twelve transects with a distance of I 0 - 15 km in between. l 02 sites were chosen in these transects and visited once per two months for successive three years with recording the growing wild plants in these sites.
4- A survey tor the wild weeds in the main cultivated winter and summer crops in this area. It was found that 89 species associated with wheat, 79 species with broad bean, 53 species in clover, 42 species in cotton and 40 species were recoded in maize.
5- Frequency parameter was used to evaluate the occurrence of these weeds in the different crops after randomly 1200 quadrats for each crop in the area of study. These weeds divided into tour main
