Hesham Fathy Ali Talaab;

Abstract

Critically ill patients. in ICU who are intubated and mechanically ventilated typically experience pain, anxiety and other form of discomfort that are accompanied by agitation, sleep deprivation and psychosis. In these patients sedation is necessary to prevent anxiety, provide comfort, suppress couph, prevent respiratory fighting on ventilator and facilitate specific procedures such as tracheal suction.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the clinical effects of propofol and midazolam in the sedation of patients undergoing prolonged mechanical ventilation in ICU. Sedative dosages are compared as regard level and quality of sedation, speed of recovery haemodynamic effects and laboratory findings.

80 mechanically ventilated patients were studied and randomly allocated to receive continuous sedation with propofol (40 patients) or midazolam (40 patients).

Patients in propofol group received bolus dose 2.5 mglkg
followed by continuous infusion of 1-6 mg/kglhr.
