Abstract

Transfusion of blood components is a necessary and critical in the management of many conditions. There has been an increasing usage of leukocyte depleted cellular blood components. •

This study was conducted on 135 B-thalassemic patients attending the Pediatric Haematology/Oncology Clinic, Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University, during the period from 15/3/1999 till 15/3/2000. All patients were screened for occurrence of FNHTRs, thirty of them were randomly chosen for this study, the patient's were classified, according to the type of transfused blood whether, packed, washed or filtered by bed side or lab. type filter.
The results revealed increase level of residual leukocytes in packed red cell units than in the leukoreduced red cell units, increase level of serum tumor necrosis factor alpha with prolonged period of transfusion (> 3 hour) and increase residual leukocyte in the packed red cell units and serum tumor necrosis factor alpha with increase days of storage.
The study also revealed marked reduction in the occurrence of febrile non hemolytic transfusion reaction after receiving Jeukoreduced red cell units either by bed side or laboratory type filters. It may be concluded that leukodepleted blood units are mandatory and safe.
