POSTERIOR CAPSULE OPACITIES FOLLO NGFOLDABLEINTRAOCULAR LENS
Amr Nagieb Battah;
Abstract
Extracapsular cataract surgery has become very popular in recent years. This is partly because of its lower incidence of complications ( particularly retinal detachment and cystoid macular edema) .
The current era of phacoemulsification makes it possible to remove crystalline lens through a 3mm incision . Tllis small mctston cataract surgery has many advantages : faster visual rehabilitation, less postoperative astigmatism and less inflammation .
However , with the use of hard polymethylmethacrylate
(PMMA) intraoccular lenses, the wound has to be enlarged to 6or
7mm in order to introduce the lens. This negates the advantages of small incision and demand the development offoldable intraocular lenses that can be implanted through a small incision Hydrogel and silicone lenses are both considered soft lenses . Silicone is a synthetic polymer consisting of cross linked dimethyl siloxane . Hydrogels are polymers ofhydroxyethyl methacrylate.
